Feelings, nothing more than feelings …
If you grew up in the seventies and eighties, you might’ve heard a familiar tune as you read those words.
They are the words of a lovesick man whose feelings are unrequited.
Even though the writer of this song seemingly tries to downplay the importance of feelings in the above first line of the song, if you listen to the tune in its entirety, you’ll find out that he “feels” like he will never be free from the feelings of love he has for a girl he’s lost forever.
Yes, the song is somewhat of a downer, but, if you’ve ever loved and lost, you can relate.
Maybe you feel like you will never be free from negative feelings that, at times, seem to take over your life.
If you are a believer in Christ, then I’ve got some really good news for you.
Whether the difficult feelings you are experiencing are from unrequited love, frustration, anger, unforgiveness, bitterness, or an overall sense of hopelessness, there is hope!
Lean in, listen to, and act on the following words of the One Who loved you first and loves you most, and you’ll find yourself enjoying greater freedom from the overwhelming negative feelings you sometimes experience.
“My lovely bride, the feelings you experience are powerful motivators.”
“So it is important to remind yourself of their proper place in your life.”
“Feelings are in the realm of your soul and body.”
“They are responders to whatever you are thinking about.”
“If you meditate on what is true, godly feelings will accompany those thoughts.”
“Conversely, if your focus is not on eternal spiritual reality, then ungodly feelings will naturally result as the negative circumstances of this world come at you.”
“Although feelings are great followers of realized truth, they are lousy leaders.”
“It is much easier to believe your way into a new way of feeling than to try to feel your way into a new way of believing.”
“Don’t count on your feelings to convey truth, unless they are responding to beliefs concerning Me and your flawless identity in Me.”
“I want you to continually allow the truth—My Word and My indwelling Spirit—to take the driver’s seat in your life rather than your feelings.”
“If you are feeling lousy, then think about what you have been thinking about.”
“I have entrusted you with the incredible privilege (and My power) to choose your thoughts.”
“To experience godly feelings, simply replace your wrong thinking with what is true, good, and right.”
“Think about things that are pure and lovely.”
“Always think the best of people, instead of the worst.”
“Think about everything you can praise Me for and be happy about.”
“This is My tried-and-true prescription for godly feelings.”
