True confession.
Because of my fear of failure, I dropped out of college twice before I started the third time and stayed the course, earning my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics for Secondary Education.
I made straight A’s in high school and couldn’t bear the thought of making anything less than perfect in college.
And because I got my significance—my worth and value—from being a straight-A student, when it looked like I might make a B or possibly a C in college, I bailed.
Maybe you can relate and maybe you don’t.
You might even be thinking, Wow! Was she messed up or what?
The truth is that I wasn’t messed up; my mind was.
It was in dire need of knowing the truth that would ultimately cause me to rest in the settled significance I already had in Christ.
Does your mind need to get the memo that “You don’t have to perform perfectly to enjoy God and who He made you to be?”
If so, I think you will savor these words from your Savior:
“My dearest darling, though you may not realize it, it is possible that you are trying to find your significance in this world through your vocation.”
“It doesn’t matter whether you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a schoolteacher, janitor, or stay-at-home mom.”
“If you think your value and importance come from what you do, then a crucial question must be answered.”
“What happens when you lose your job, you become medically disabled, your grown children leave, and so on?”
“Where, then, do you find your sense of purpose and importance?”
“The only solid ground you can stand on in this life is realizing that your significance comes from Me alone.”
“I created you and gave you unsurpassable worth by dying on the cross for you.”
“I have never stopped loving you and never will, regardless of what you do or don’t do.”
“The very fact that you exist means that I wanted you.”
“You took My breath away when you said yes to eternal spiritual union with Me!”
“That was the one “work” I required of you.”
“Belief into Me.”
“You are (and always will be) as beautiful as the full moon and as pure as the sun.”
“Apart from what you do.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Absolutely gorgeous in Me!”
“Stop wasting precious time in this world trying to make something of yourself when I have already made you perfect in Me.”
“When you begin to realize My work in you is finished, you will begin to rest in your settled significance in Me.”
Dear reader, where do you find your significance?
